Gilchrist, who visited the Texans last week, was released by the New York Jets on May 4. The latter move came after the Jets used their first two picks of the 2017 draft on safeties.

The 28-year-old Gilchrist becomes the senior member of the Texans' safeties, joining starters Andre Hal and Corey Moore. Houston lost strong safety Quintin Demps to the Chicago Bears in free agency.

Gilchrist saw his 2016 season end in Week 14 after sustaining a ruptured patellar tendon. He collected 55 tackles and two interceptions in 13 games.

Gilchrist played in 29 games since signing with the Jets before the 2015 season.
