July 30 (UPI) -- George Atkinson III is now a member of the Oakland Raiders after being plucked off of waivers.
Oakland announced the move Saturday. Atkinson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Raiders in May of 2014. He spent portions of three seasons with the franchise before being waived and picked up in September by the Cleveland Browns.
Atkinson, 24, has been used more frequently on special teams than in the backfield during his brief NFL tenure. He has seven career rushing attempts for 34 yards and a score, all coming in 2016 for the Browns. He also has 15 kick returns for 271 yards, an average of 18.1 per attempt.
He opened eyes last preseason when he rushed for 191 yards on 19 carries. Atkinson signed a one-year, $615,000 contract with the Browns in April. He played 22 offensive snaps last season.
Atkinson's dad, George Atkinson, Jr. played 10 seasons for the Raiders, including for their Super Bowl XI winning team.
Oakland also waived linebacker Shaan Washington and signed linebacker Darnell Sankey Saturday. The Raiders released running back Taiwan Jones and tackle Austin Howard on Friday, in addition to signing long snapper Andrew East.
Jones, 29, spent his entire six-year career with the Raiders. He was a fourth round pick by the franchise in the 2011 NFL Draft.
