July 26 (UPI) -- Despite being put on injured reserve Tuesday by the Miami Dolphins, Koa Misi's agent says his client is not retiring.

A source told WINZ 940 AM Tuesday night that Misi planned to tell the Dolphins on Wednesday that he would retire after seven NFL seasons. The report specified that Misi told his family members and close friends about his plans.

Misi, 30, has been out of football since suffering a neck injury last season. His injured reserve designation means that even if he does get healthy this season, he can't return to the field.

"We're all disappointed. It's unexpected. I feel bad for him and we'll see what the future entails," Misi's agent Kenny Zuckerman told the Miami Herald.

Zuckerman told the Herald that the retirement reports are "not true."

On Tuesday, Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he was "waiting to hear back on anything" related to the health of Misi and center Mike Pouncey.

"In my mind, I feel confident that [he will be able to play again] at some point," Gase said Tuesday. "I just don't know where we're at right now. Once I get those results and talk to our guys and talk to [Executive Vice President of Football Operations] Mike [Tannenbaum] and [General Manager] Chris [Grier] and Koa, then I'll know more. I just ... I don't have enough information right now."

Gase said that he "feels better probably than a lot of people do" outside of the Dolphins' facility when it comes to the team's linebacker depth.

Misi was a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He started 11 games in 2010, nine games in 2011 and a career-high 14 games in 2012. He has started 38 out of a possible 64 regular season games in the last four years.

The linebacker signed a five-year, $17.72 million contract in 2013. Misi has 352 tackles, 12 sacks, 11 passes defended, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles during his seven-year tenure with the Dolphins.

He is currently recovering from spinal fusion surgery and did not participate in the Dolphins' offseason program. Miami drafted Ohio State's Raekwon McMillian and signed free agent Lawrence Timmons this offseason to bulk its linebacker corps.
