July 25 (UPI) -- Running back Kenneth Dixon was already facing a four-game suspension, now he's benched for the entire season after meniscus surgery.

The second-year running back had his knee repaired Tuesday. A source told NFL Network that his recovery will take four to five months and he will be out for the upcoming season.

Dixon, 23, was looking at a shot at the starting job for the Baltimore Ravens. He rushed for 382 yards and two scores last year during his rookie campaign.

A source told NFL Network that the Ravens and Dixon went into the surgery thinking it would be a "trim" with a two or three week recovery. The Ravens signed Bobby Rainey for depth in wake of the injury. Baltimore also has Terrance West, Danny Woodhead and Javaorus Allen remaining on the depth chart.

Dixon tore his meniscus while training, according to the Ravens' website. He also missed four games last season after suffering a knee injury in the third week of preseason. He aggravated that injury later in the season.

The running back was slapped with a four game suspension in March for violating the NFL's PED policy.

"It has been really great for Kenneth to learn from Danny and even Terrance, like you say," Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters in June. "He is a younger guy, but he is a good teacher. Kenneth is a sponge. He will do whatever you ask him to do as hard as he can. He listens and he learns and he gets better every day by leaps and bounds. I would put Terrance West in the same category. Although he is obviously more experienced, he has the same attitude"

The Ravens owned the worst rushing attack in the AFC last season at 91.4 yards per game.
