July 24 (UPI) -- Running back Latavius Murray was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list by the Minnesota Vikings.

The team announced the move Monday. In addition to Murray, the team also placed linebacker Shaan Washington on the list. Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd was place on the active/non-football injury list.

Murray, 27, joined the Vikings as a free agent this offseason after the departure of All-Pro franchise rushing leader Adrian Peterson. He was expected to compete with rookie Dalvin Cook for the starting job, but has missed offseason activities while recovering from ankle surgery.

"My health is really good," Murray told reporters Sunday. "I'm feeling good and the progress is coming along. As far as practice, I'm not sure yet. I still have to get with coach and the training staff to see what they're going to have me do."

Missing time hasn't caused Murray to lack confidence that he would come out on top of his battle with the rookie out of Florida State. In June he told NFL Network that he would be the team's starting running back for their season opener on Sept. 11 against the New Orleans Saints.

"I'm on the field," Murray said on Good Morning Football. "I'm getting the ball."

Despite having Murray, the Vikings traded up to draft Cook at the beginning of the second round in the 2017 NFL Draft.

"We are going to push each other, and I think the good thing about this backfield is that we have some workhorses," Cook told reporters Sunday. "We have guys that are going to push each other to the next level and are going to get the best out of each other, so having those two guys in the meeting room with me is good because they never let you get comfortable with yourself. That is the good thing about us."

Murray can be removed from the list at any time. The former Oakland Raiders Pro Bowler rushed for a career-best 1,066 yards in 2015, but piled up 788 rushing yards in 2016. He rushed for four yards per carry in both seasons.

Washington signed with the Vikings in May as an undrafted free agent. The former Texas A&M defender had 104 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles during his senior season for the Aggies.

Floyd, 25, is recovering from meniscus surgery. The No. 23 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft has yet to play a full season. He hasn't started a game since 2015. Floyd will miss at least the first six games of the season with this designation. His injury turned career threatening due to nerve damage he suffered during his September surgery, according to NFL Network.

Minnesota also signed former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Arturo Uzdavinis Monday.

Vikings camp began Monday in Mankato, Minn. Selected players reported on Sunday.
