The Cleveland Browns announced Sunday that they signed first-round pick defensive back Jabrill Peppers, one day before rookies are scheduled to report.

The four-year deal is worth about $10.3 million, including about a $5.6 million signing bonus, according to Cleveland.com, which reported that the holdup in reaching an agreement was guaranteed money in the fourth year of the contract.

Peppers, the 25th overall pick out of Michigan, missed some time in the spring with an undisclosed injury, but he is penciled in as the starting strong safety. He may be used as a kick returner as well.

Peppers begins his career in Stage One of the NFL's drug program because of a diluted sample at the league's Scouting Combine.
