NFL: Arizona Cardinals stars won't play in HOF game

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will not play in the Hall of Fame Game against the Dallas Cowboys in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 3.

Linebacker Karlos Dansby also may not play in the game.

"I doubt Karlos plays," Arians told reporters Saturday. "We'll see."

In addition, Arians said linebacker Jarvis Jones has a vessel injury in his quad and is listed as day-to-day.

The Cardinals held a morning walk-through on Saturday and took the field in the afternoon for their first official practice.

The HOF contest is an extra preseason game for the Cardinals and Arians wants to limit Palmer's workload this summer.

The 37-year-old Palmer is coming off back-to-back seasons with 4,000-plus yards. In 2016, he passed for 4,233 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games.

Fitzgerald, 33, announced in February that he would come back for the final year of his contract. Last season, he hauled in 107 catches for 1,023 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games.

A 10-time Pro Bowler, Fitzgerald leads all active players with 14,389 receiving yards, the ninth-best total in NFL history. Only five players are above 15,000.

The Cardinals likely will start backup quarterback Drew Stanton in Palmer's place in the Hall of Fame game.

The Cardinals are playing for the first time in the game since 2012 as they honor the induction of quarterback Kurt Warner into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Warner will be inducted at the Aug. 5 ceremony.
