July 17 (UPI) -- Rookie defensive back Charlie Miller is no longer with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being released Monday via injury settlement.

Miller joined the Jaguars on May 1 as a rookie free agent. The 6-foot-1, 190 pound defender had 70 tackles, three tackles for a loss, four passes defended and three interceptions in 24 games during his four seasons at Dartmouth.

He had 41 tackles and two interceptions in nine games in 2016. Miller was a football and baseball captain in high school at Totino Grace.

He ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at his pro day workout. The defensive back had to finish up his course work for his economics degree while juggling rookie minicamp and OTAs.

Miller fit in as a reserve safety for the Jaguars, behind Barry Church, Tashaun Gipson, Jarrod Wilson, Peyton Thompson and others.

"They definitely see me as a special-teams guy right now," Miller told the St. Paul Pioneer Press in May. "I feel like to outsiders it might be seen like, 'Oh, he's only playing special teams.' That isn't even close to how I'm looking at it. I know this is my opportunity to prove myself...I know I have to bring my lunch pail and go to work and grind and show the coaches that I really want it."

"You dream of playing and being a star in the NFL as a kid, and even though I'm far from that, to have this type of opportunity is awesome," he added. "It means a lot to at least have a shot."

The Jaguars now have 89 players under contract heading into training camp.
