Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson likely playing under franchise tender

Trumaine Johnson is expected to play under the franchise tender for a second straight season after being unable to reach an agreement on a long-term contract with the Los Angeles Rams, ESPN reported Tuesday.

Johnson, 27, signed his $16.742 million franchise tender for the 2017 season in March, guaranteeing that he will be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL next season.

However, Johnson will reportedly not sign a new deal with the Rams before the league's July 17 deadline.

Johnson is the first cornerback to receive the franchise tag in consecutive seasons since Charles Woodson in 2004 and 2005. He earned $13.952 million under the tag last season.

In 14 games last season with Los Angeles, Johnson recorded 57 tackles, one interception and 11 passes defensed. He has 263 career tackles, 16 picks and 53 passes defensed in 69 games over five seasons with the franchise.
