The Seattle Seahawks signed backup quarterback Austin Davis on Monday, closing out any possibility of Colin Kaepernick joining the team.

Davis will join Trevone Boykin as a backup option behind Russell Wilson after the Seahawks waived quarterback Jake Heaps.

Davis and Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks a couple of weeks ago. Coach Pete Carroll indicated last week the team had no plans to sign Kaepernick, who opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March.

Davis, 28, is in his sixth season, entering the league in 2012 with the then-St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi. Davis made his NFL debut in 2014 when he appeared in 10 games, starting eight, including a Week 7 victory over Seattle that was statistically the best game of his career.

Davis signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2015, appearing in three games and starting two, then spent part of last season with the Denver Broncos but did not appear in a game.

In 13 career games (10 starts), Davis has completed 62.4 percent of his passes (236-of-378 passing) for 2,548 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, with an 80.4 passer rating.

Boykin, last year's No. 2 quarterback, was arrested twice earlier this off-season -- once for misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and public intoxication and another time for possibly violating his parole because of the incident. He has been practicing with the Seahawks during organized team activities.

The Seahawks' decision to sign Davis will continue the discussion of why Kaepernick hasn't received much attention on the free agent market. His visit to Seattle was his first this offseason.

Kaepernick, 29, made headlines last season when he kneeled during the national anthem to protest injustices against African Americans and minorities around the United States.

"Colin's been a fantastic football player, and he's going to continue to be," Carroll said last week. "At this time, we didn't do anything with it, but we know where he is and who he is and we had a chance to understand him much more so. He's a starter in this league. And we have a starter. But he's a starter in this league, and I can't imagine that someone won't give him a chance to play."
