May 30 (UPI) -- While most of the offseason attention was focused on Kirk Cousins, Matt Jones could be the one on his way off of the Washington Redskins.

Jones has been absent from the team's OTAs and training in Florida, according to multiple reports. The Washington Post reported that he doesn't plan to attend the team's future OTAs. The Post also reported that coaches told Jones that he is "no longer a part of the team's plans..."

ESPN reported that Jones wants to be released or traded. The report also stated that the franchise currently has no plans to release the third-year back.

In April, NFL Network reported that the team was trying to trade Jones.

Rob Kelley currently tops the depth chart. The Redskins also have Chris Thompson, Mack Brown and fourth round draft pick Samaje Perine.

Jones, 24, had 794 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns in 2015. He had 533 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns last season in seven starts. He was a healthy scratch for the team's final nine games. Jones has eight fumbles in 20 career contests.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said that Jones "better" attend the team's mandatory minicamp, but he can't "force" his attendance at OTAs.

"That's a good question, something that Matt Jones will have to answer," Gruden told reporters last week. "This is a voluntary deal, as we all know, and I can't force the issue on anybody. So if he's disgruntled in any way, shape or form, it's news to me. I imagine like Jordan Reed and Trent Williams, I'm sure Matt is working out and staying in good shape."

Perine impressed Gruden in rookie camp and could challenge Kelley for the starting role.

"You see him out there running around – were you impressed," Gruden told reporters during rookie camp. "Yeah, so was I. I like guys who come in here and love football and he does. He's a very smart guy. You can tell that he's going to be a very hard worker and, of course, he runs hard. You can't see that in shorts, obviously, but you could see that his pad level is always down, he's got good vision, he's got good feet in the hole and he caught the ball well."

The Redskins picked Jones in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He is due $639,113 this season and more than $740,000 in 2018.

If Jones is cut or traded, it would clear things up slightly in the Redskins' backfield, but not much. With Kelley coming off of a rookie campaign including 704 yards and six scores on 168 carries, he should get the first crack at starting. But you should expect the rookie Perine to push him for work early and often. This entire backfield is something to avoid on fantasy football draft day, unless you want to take a very late round dart throw.
