May 30 (UPI) -- Three-time Pro Bowl selection Jairus Byrd will work out for the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday after getting cut in February.

ESPN reported that Byrd will work out for the franchise with a crew of defensive backs.

Byrd, 30, led the NFL with nine interceptions his rookie year in 2009 for the Buffalo Bills. The former second round draft pick went to the Pro Bowl that year and received the honor again in 2012 and 2013. Byrd left the Bills in free agency during the 2014 offseason, signing a six-year $54 million contract with the New Orleans Saints.

The free safety played three seasons for the Saints, compiling 157 tackles, eight passes defended, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a sack.

San Francisco currently has Jimmie Ward, Eric Reid, Adrian Colbert, Jaquiski Tartt, Don Jones and Vinnie Sunseri on its depth chart at safety.

Byrd was once the highest-paid safety in the NFL. He was benched in 2016, before the Saints made him a post-June 1 cut, saving the franchise $7.8 million in salary cap space. Byrd played in just 33 of a possible 48 games for the Saints.

The Saints had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season in terms of yards allowed. Pro Football Focus rated Byrd as the No. 46 safety in the NFL last season.

Byrd's father, Gill Byrd, is the defensive backs coach for the Bills. He was hired in February.
