Cincinnati Bengals hire former first rounder Aaron Curry as intern

May 30 (UPI) -- UNC Charlotte defensive line coach Aaron Curry is joining the pro ranks once again in the Cincinnati Bengals' 2017 Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching fellowship program.

Curry, 31, was the No. 4 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft after starring at Wake Forest. The 2008 Dick Butkus Award winner played just four NFL seasons. He played his first two seasons for the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Oakland Raiders in a 2012 trade.

He played in just two games for the Raiders during his final season in 2012.

Curry had 144 career tackles, 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He scored two touchdowns in 48 games.

He announced his retirement in 2013.

"After a lot of prayer. Consulting with God. The best thing for my family and myself is to retire from the @nfl. I enjoyed it #DeliveredDefender," Curry tweeted on the day of his retirement.

Curry will work with the Bengals during OTAs. The team also brought on Florida A&M University running backs coach Roderick Plummer, Johnson C. Smith University offensive coordinator Tory Woodbury, Clark Atlanta University offensive line and tight ends coach Johnathan Carr and Florida A&M University defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Levon Kirkland.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and defensive line coach Jacob Burney are former interns from the program.

"I had the opportunity to work in this program when Coach Walsh initiated it with the 49ers, and it's great to see it continue as strong as it is," Lewis said in a team statement. "We are happy to have these coaches with us to benefit our staff as well as aid in their development as a coach."

Plummer will work with the Bengals during OTAs. Woodbury will work with the team during minicamp and OTAs. Carr and Kirkland will be with the Bengals through training camp.
