The team announced the one-year deal on Thursday.
Chicago has also added former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Markus Wheaton, Tennessee Titans pass catcher Kendall Wright and former New York Giants wide receiver Rueben Randle this offseason. The Bears still have Kevin White and Cameron Meredith on its depth chart after letting Alshon Jeffrey walk in free agency.
"The Giants will forever be family. But for now, Bear down," Cruz wrote on social media.
The Giants cut Cruz in February. The seven-year veteran made the Pro Bowl in 2012, but hasn't eclipsed 1,000 yards or started more than 12 games in a season since then. Cruz suffered a severe knee injury during the 2014 season, limiting him to just six games. He missed the entire 2015 season and has been hampered by various lower-body ailments.
Last season Cruz had 39 receptions for 586 yards and one score in 15 games.
He also was part of the Giants' Super Bowl XLVI championship squad. Cruz shares the record for the longest touchdown reception in NFL history (99 yards).

The undrafted free agent success story told WMPR-FM New York this week that he didn't succeed last year because the Giants didn't want him on the team anymore.

"Half the year I'm balling and then the other half I'm not getting the ball," Cruz said on the Breakfast Club radio show. "You're just like 'What's going on?' I'm like OK. I see what's happening. They don't want me here anymore. Because granted, and a lot of people probably don't know this, but let's say I play well, I'm a 1,000-yard receiver last year, it would have been more difficult from a fan perspective to cut me."
"You know, If I'm a 1,000-yard guy they'd be like, well, why are you cutting Cruz? He just had 1,000 yards, five, six touchdowns. That doesn't make sense. But if I have 500 yards or whatever the case may be, it's a lot easier for the fans to be like 'Oh well he didn't play well, so that's why they cut him.'"
"And if I played well, they were due to -- they owed me a ton of money that next year so it was like, let's get Cruz off the books."
