Bears sticking with QB Glennon over first-rounder Trubisky

April 28 (UPI) -- Veteran quarterback Mike Glennon will be the Chicago Bears' Week 1 starter despite the team moving up in the draft to pick Mitchell Trubisky.

Bears general manager Ryan Pace said as much Thursday night after the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

"In regards to Mike Glennon, Mike Glennon is our starting quarterback," Pace told reporters. "There is no quarterback competition when Mitch gets here. Glennon is our starting quarterback. We'll focus on Mitch's development and Mike Glennon winning games for the Chicago Bears. I talked to Mike tonight."

"He understands the competitiveness of our business at every single position. Mike also understands he's our starting quarterback. Mike's been here working hard all the time, already developing leadership with his teammates. I'm extremely excited about Mike Glennon this season and I'm extremely excited about adding Mitch to our roster."

The Bears surrendered its No. 3 pick, a third and a fourth-rounder this year, and a 2018 third-round pick for San Francisco's No. 2 pick Thursday night. It netted the top quarterback prospect in the draft.

But Trubisky started just 13 games in college.

"That's been something we talked about a lot," Pace told reporters. "That's real. But watching every single one of his snaps throughout his career – even when he would get in in 2015 – every time he got in the game he made plays. Every time he got in the game something happened in a positive way so we want back on that and felt good about it."

In his final season at North Carolina, Trubisky threw for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 308 yards and five scores.

Pace signed Glennon to a three-year, $45 million deal in free agency this offseason. Glennon also got $18.5 million guaranteed.

Glennon, 27, has completed 59.4 percent of his throws for 4,100 yards, 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 21 career games. He was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He owned a 5-13 record as a starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before fleeing to Chicago.

"I'm going to give that city absolutely everything I've got," Trubisky said Thursday. "And I can't wait to go to work."

In 2016, Bears quarterbacks completed 62.1 percent of their passes for 4,139 yards, 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions en route to a 3-13 record. The franchise released long-time starter Jay Cutler in March after he spent eight years under center.
