April 14 (UPI) -- He didn't leave with a contract, but Adrian Peterson's recent visit with the New Orleans Saints went positively.

Sources told the New Orleans Advocate that Peterson's meeting with the franchise "went well" and the "door isn't closed" on the former NFL MVP signing a contract.

Peterson, 32, was due $18 million this season before being cut in late February by the Minnesota Vikings. On Thursday, the NFL Network reported that Peterson isn't expected to sign with a new team until after the April 27 NFL Draft.

The Advocate reported that it is unknown if the two parties have discussed Peterson's potential salary. New Orleans could even be looking at the veteran as a backup.

The four-time All-Pro led the NFL with 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground in 2015. His ridiculous 2,097-rushing-yard season came in 2012. Peterson has a career rushing average of 4.9 yards per carry. In 2016, Peterson managed just 1.9 yards per tote.

Mark Ingram currently tops the Saints depth chart at running back. Ingram, 27, signed a four-year, $16 million contract in 2015. His current deal includes $7.6 million guaranteed. Last season Ingram finished with 1,043 rushing yards and scored seven touchdowns. His 2016 campaign marked the first time in his six-year career that he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season.
