League sources told ESPN that Romo left his Dallas Cowboys job and football career to be CBS Sports' No. 1 color commentator. He'll replace Simms and work with fellow analyst Jim Nantz. The Sports Business Journal first reported Romo's "verbal agreement" with CBS.
The Cowboys are expected to release Romo Tuesday, following a saga which started when the quarterback was injured in the preseason. The four-time Pro Bowl selection is the Cowboys' all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passer rating. His 97.1 passer rating ranks No. 4 all-time behind Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady.
Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, and Troy Aikman also turned careers with the Cowboys into broadcast booth opportunities.
Romo, 36, is being represented by CAA Sports in the deal.
