Retirement is option for Dallas Cowboys' Tony Romo

March 10 (UPI) -- One of the greatest Dallas Cowboys of all time said if he were Tony Romo, he would "shut it down."

Deion Sanders said as much on NFL Network a few weeks ago and now reports are saying that if Romo doesn't re-sign with the Cowboys or latch on with another team, he could call it quits.

"When was the last time that Tony even finished a season," Sanders said on NFL Network. "Tony is 37-years-old. He's not a spring chicken. He's a tremendous salary cap hit for the Dallas Cowboys so I'm thinking that they gotta move him. By the way, they gotta guy named Dak Prescott who is pretty darn good. Tony can still get it done. I believe physically, mentally, and you always talk about from the shoulders up. But can he really last for the endurance of the season. I don't see that."

"I don't know if he needs the money. I don't think he needs the money. I would shut it down if it's me. Or I would just sit back and say let me back up Dak Prescott just in case he gets hurt because here I can stay at home, raise my kids in my beautiful new home I just built. And guess what, have the opportunity to win a super bowl."

Romo, 36, has played just five games in the last two seasons. He started 62 out of a possible 64 games from 2011 through 2014.

"There is still option C, this idea of retirement," NFL Network reporter Jane Slater said Friday. "At 37-years-old next month and his history of injuries, the idea of going to a new team, sort of rebooting his career with a different franchise, learning a new playbook, learning new management, I think that's something that you've got to consider. So as much as these teams have to consider that Tony Romo is a good fit for them, I think Romo has to consider if this is a fit for him."

Romo released a goodbye video on social media Thursday.

While the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos remain the frontrunners to land Romo, the narrative has changed multiple times as to how it happens. The Cowboys were planning to release Romo on Thursday, according to reports. Now the franchise is allegedly trying to trade the veteran. His saga could continue until after the NFL Draft.
