March 9 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers waived center Marcus Martin on Wednesday, a day before the start of free agency.

The move saves the 49ers nearly $2 million in salary cap space.

The 6-foot-3, 321-pound Martin was the first of San Francisco's three third-round picks in the 2014 NFL Draft out of USC. He appeared in 26 games (24 starts) on the offensive line in three seasons with the 49ers.

Last season, the 23-year-old Martin played in five games (two starts) before being placed on the injured reserve on Dec. 31.
