March 9 (UPI) -- Within minutes of his release from the Baltimore Ravens, Elvis Dumervil changed his Twitter bio to lead with this query: Who needs a pass rusher?

Dumervil, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, announced the transaction via social media. He joined the Ravens four years ago, when a fax machine snafu at the free agent deadline prompted the pass rusher's exit from the Denver Broncos.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome propped the door open for Dumervil's return. But an ankle injury limited him to eight games and Dumervil notched just three sacks in 2016.

Since landing in Baltimore in 2013, Dumervil posted 125 tackles, 35.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 55 games (24 starts).

"Elvis Dumervil has been a leader for us on and off the field," Newsome said in a team press release. "He has made a positive impression on our franchise, and we have been fortunate to have him as a Raven. We respect his professionalism and the way he plays the game, in addition to his extensive charitable efforts that have greatly impacted our Baltimore community and his parents' native country of Haiti.

"We have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning in the future."

Dumervil had 99 career sacks.

The Ravens have been hit hard by veteran departures since the offseason began with veteran wide receiver Steve Smith Sr.'s retirement. Right tackle Ricky Wagner agreed to a deal with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, linebacker Zachary Orr (neck) retired and Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk is not expected to rejoin the cap-strained Ravens.
