March 4 (UPI) -- The New York Jets officially released wide receiver Brandon Marshall on Friday, saving $7.5 million against the salary cap.

The production of the six-time Pro Bowler dropped sharply last season when he had just 59 receptions for 788 yards and three touchdowns. One year earlier, Marshall set Jets single-season marks of 109 receptions and 1,434 yards and matched the club record of 14 touchdown receptions.

"I've known Brandon a long time and, more than the great player he is, I'm proud of the man that he's become," New York coach Todd Bowles said in a statement. "His passion about mental health awareness speaks for itself and he was always willing to mentor our younger players. He cares deeply about the game and others and it shows in everything he does."

Marshall is the third veteran to be let go by the club in the past week. New York previously released center Nick Mangold and cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Marshall was informed Thursday night that he would be released. He thanked the club and apologized to fans on his Instagram account.

"I want to especially thank the incredibly loyal Jets fans, who were always there for us with their never-ending support," Marshall wrote. "I'm sorry......I'm sorry we couldn't bring you a championship, but I wish you and my former organization the very best in your pursuit for one in the future.

"I'm looking forward to finding a great organization where I can contribute and bring home a championship. I know I have a lot left to give ... I will truly miss the Jets, but we are excited for what lies ahead. #MindOverMatter"

Jets owner Woody Johnson complimented Marshall's on-field play and off-field contributions that include his drive to enlighten people about mental illnesses.

"Brandon's commitment and passion for football is undeniable," Johnson said in a statement. "His drive to support mental health awareness is beyond admirable. We appreciate his contributions to the organization and wish him the best."

The Jets acquired Marshall from the Chicago Bears prior to the 2015 season. Marshall played three seasons in Chicago, setting personal highs for receptions (118) and yardage (1,508) in 2012.

"Brandon was an important addition in 2015," general manager Mike Maccagnan said. "He strives to make the most out of every opportunity and brought an unrivaled commitment to his craft. I'm sure he will continue with that same mindset as he moves forward."

Marshall began his career with the Denver Broncos in 2006 and recorded three consecutive 100-yard catch seasons with the club from 2007-09. He also began a stretch of seven 1,000-yard receiving campaigns.

The Broncos shipped him to the Miami Dolphins following the 2009 season. He played two years for the Dolphins before being traded to the Bears prior to the 2012 season.

Marshall has career totals of 941 receptions, 12,061 receiving yards and 82 touchdown catches in his 11 seasons. He has eight 1,000-yard seasons and six 100-catch seasons in his career.
