INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn stirred up a hornet's nest Wednesday when he said it's not "really fair" that Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon wasn't invited to the Scouting Combine.

Mixon and several other players, including Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly, were excluded from the Combine because of off-field issues in the past.

While first acknowledging that the team will "leave the door open" on the potential of drafting Mixon, Quinn then said, "I think it's really disappointing that Joe is not here. We come to see the best college football players in college football, so there's 330, 340 some odd players here. Him not being here because of those issues, personally, I don't think that's really fair because we have a lot of investigation that we want to do on him and to get him in one spot for all the teams would have been great

"I'm not part of those decisions how those guys are chosen, but I do think it's a disappointment that guys like him, and there are a few others that you could put in that category, that we're going to be chasing around in the months of March and April. It's really not fair to the players, to be honest with you."

While some teams will have Mixon off the board, Quinn said for now, at least, he is on the Lions' board.

Quinn said when he and others in the organization have the opportunity to talk with Mixon, "It would be a long conversation. Some of the stuff that's out on him, it's out there. Everyone can look at the video and see exactly what happened, but what we really don't know are what the circumstances were around that.

"I'd like to be able to sit down with the people who know Joe or Joe and see what the circumstances were around the incident."
