Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The Denver Broncos were allegedly only interested in quarterback Tony Romo if he became a free agent.

With that possibility reportedly happening in the next two weeks, the franchise is now in the "driver's seat" to acquire the Dallas Cowboys gunslinger, according to NFL.com.

"At this point, just judging from the teams available, given Clark Hunt's comments to the Kansas City Star, that Alex Smith is going to be the Chiefs quarterback for 2017...it seems the Broncos are clearly in the driver's seat in the potential free agent Tony Romo sweepstakes, if he is willing to take a pay cut from the $13 million or $14 million he was due this year," Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network. "It seems like the Broncos, and then it seems like everyone else."

Romo, 36, is signed through 2019 and is due $14 million in 2017, $19.5 million in 2018, and $20.5 million in 2019. His release isn't expected until after the new league year commences next Thursday.

"I would just reiterate what [Chiefs coach] Andy [Reid] has said several times throughout the offseason, which is he's very happy with Alex and Alex is going to be our starter going into 2017," chairman Clark Hunt told Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones told ESPN's Todd Archer Tuesday that he expects Romo and Jerry Jones to meet "soon" regarding Romo's future with the franchise.

"He wouldn't dismiss possibility of Romo remaining with the team but acknowledged it was unlikely," Archer reported.

This weekend, 9News Denver's Mike Klis reported that the Broncos are willing to "at least discuss" pursing Romo.

The Broncos currently have Paxton Lynch, the No. 26 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and former third-stringer Trevor Siemian on its roster. Romo owns a 78-49 record as a starter in 14 NFL seasons.
