Darrelle Revis cut by New York Jets

Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Revis Island had been sinking for a while, now it's fully submerged.

Four-time All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis was released Tuesday by the New York Jets. The 10-year veteran was already rumored to be switching over to safety after being torched last season by opposing wide receivers. Now the 31-year-old is looking for a new job, and possibly to stay out of jail.

Revis is facing four felony charges and one misdemeanor charge for his involvement two weeks ago in a Pittsburgh brawl. He later turned himself into police and has a court hearing scheduled for March 15. Revis signed a five-year, $70 million deal with the Jets in 2015. His departure creates $7.33 million in cap space for the Jets.

The cornerback could see anything from probation to a low state prison sentence, according to NJ Advance Media.

"Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform," Jets owner Woody Johnson told Jets.com. "His combination of talent, preparation and instincts is rare and helped him become one of the most dominant players of his generation. I appreciate Darrelle's contributions to this organization and, wherever his career takes him, his home will always be here with the Jets."

Revis will officially hit free agency on March 9.

"When you're dealing with a player of Darrelle's caliber, these decisions are extremely hard to make," general manager Mike Maccagnan told Jets.com. "We all have a great deal of respect for Darrelle and the significance of his time with the Jets cannot be overstated. He provided an example of how a pro should approach his craft and established his place in NFL history as one of the best at his position."

The Jets drafted Revis with the No. 14 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. He earned seven Pro Bowl selection and a Super Bowl, with the New England Patriots, during his career.

"I can't thank Woody Johnson and the entire Jets organization enough for taking a chance on me back in 2007," Revis tweeted. "I played some of my greatest football in green and white. Jet Nation has always been behind me and teammates. Without all of you, there would be no 'Revis Island.' I love you New York!!!!"
