The Pittsburgh Steelers released former first-round cornerback Justin Gilbert on Monday.

Gilbert, 25, saw action in 12 regular-season games for the Steelers in 2016 -- making just three tackles -- after being acquired in a preseason trade from the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 3. The Steelers sent the Browns a 2018 sixth-round pick in return.

Gilbert originally entered the NFL as the eighth overall pick of the Browns in the 2014 draft out of Oklahoma State but started just three games in two seasons.

In three NFL seasons, Gilbert recorded 42 tackles and one interception.
