Kyle Shanahan isn't looking very far for options at quarterback when he takes over as the San Francisco 49ers' head coach in the coming weeks.

The Falcons offensive coordinator has his sights set on Atlanta backup Matt Schaub as a potential bridge quarterback as the 49ers move on from embattled starter Colin Kaepernick, league sources told ESPN.

Shanahan reportedly agreed to a six-year contract to become the 49ers' new coach, a position he will assume as soon as Monday.

Kaepernick is expected to opt out of his deal and become a free agent. He is owed a $14.5 million base salary for the 2017 season.

According to ESPN, Shanahan has always "liked and respected" Schaub's play dating back to the QB's tenure with the Houston Texans.

Schaub, 35, played his first four seasons with the Falcons from 2004 until 2006 and was traded to the Texans on March 22, 2007, for the eighth-overall pick in that year's draft and two other picks.

During his seven seasons in Houston, Schaub became the Texans' all-time leader in passing yards (23,221) and touchdown passes (124). He earned Pro Bowl selections in the 2009 and 2012 seasons with the team.

Schaub was traded to the Oakland Raiders on March 21, 2014, and rejoined the Falcons as a free agent on a one-year contract last March 9.

He appeared in five games during the 2016 regular season, completing 1 of 3 passes for 16 yards.

Schaub is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
