Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Former quarterback Jeff Garcia, who told the San Francisco 49er he wanted to be its coach next season, was turned down for the Cleveland Browns quarterback coaching position.
Garcia, 46, interviewed for the position this week, but didn't get the gig, according to multiple reports. The former 49ers quarterback served as an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Rams in 2015. He took the season on in 2016.
Garcia tweeted 49ers CEO Jed York last month, asking for a chance to coach his former team. He quickly deleted the tweet, but not before accepting many messages from Twitter users approving of his ambition. He responded to the question on if he would take a quarterback coach position with a simple: "yes."
"I'm not going to sit here and deny the fact that I'd love to coach in the National Football League once again," Garcia told 95.7 The Game last month. "I had an opportunity to do that with the Rams two seasons ago. I was an assistant receiver coach now, so I was just kind of getting my foot in the door. I didn't have a chance to really work with the quarterbacks. I didn't have a chance to work with the quarterbacks at all. So that was probably the discouraging or frustrating aspect of being involved in the sport – not being able to help the position that you know best."
"But really looking at it and seeing if I can get myself in there, get myself back into a position to be beneficial to that quarterback position, that would be an ideal situation for me. Whether that happens or not, it's really difficult to say."
Garcia's Twitter timeline is full of well wishes and encouragement for him to find a job in the NFL.
The Rams fired the four-time Pro Bowl selection last January. Garcia coached offense in the CFL in 2014. Former quarterback coach Pep Hamilton left the Browns for the University of Michigan this offseason.
