Los Angeles Rams hire Greg Olson as quarterbacks coach

Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The last time Greg Olson coached for the Rams, the franchise was in a different state, in more ways than one.

Olson was hired Wednesday to be the Los Angeles Rams' quarterbacks coach, according to multiple reports. The move is another step in the direction of nurturing second-year quarterback Jared Goff. New head coach Sean McVay was hired last week, after leading the Washington Redskins offense to a stellar season behind Kirk Cousins.

Olson, 53, served as the Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016. He was the Rams' offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2007, before being fired. He coached quarterbacks for the San Francisco 49ers in 2001 and the Chicago Bears in 2003. He also coached the position in 2004 and 2005 for the Detroit Lions. Olson was a quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2009. He became and assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Jaguars in 2012, before bolting for the Oakland Raiders in 2013.

McVay and Olson both coached with the Buccaneers in 2008.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Olson passed on being considered for the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator opening for the Rams gig.

The Buffalo News reported that Olson was scheduled to interview with the Bills on Thursday.

The Jaguars offense, led by Blake Bortles, was No. 3 in passing touchdowns and No. 10 in passing yards in 2015. This season, the Jaguars were No. 16 in passing touchdowns and No. 20 in passing yards, resulting in Olson's dismissal.

Goff, 22, completed 112-of-205 passes for 1,089 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions last season while posting an 0-7 record.
