Denver Broncos hiring Mike McCoy as offensive coordinator

DENVER, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Former San Diego Chargers coach Mike McCoy didn't have to be unemployed for long.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, McCoy, and former Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave were set to interview for the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator vacancy this week. CSN's John Middlekauff reported Wednesday night that the Broncos' new coach, Vance Joseph, chose to hire McCoy.

The Broncos officially hired Joseph on Wednesday, replacing the retired Gary Kubiak.

McCoy was fired on Jan. 1 after coaching the Chargers to a 27-36 record in four seasons, with one playoff appearance. The Broncos had the third-worst offense in the AFC last season, averaging 323.1 yards per game.

NFL Network reported Tuesday that the Raiders would not be brining Musgrave back in 2017, despite touting the No. 2 offense in the AFC last season.

The Broncos have yet to fire offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, while the Raiders chose to promote quarterbacks coach Todd Downing to the position, replacing Musgrave.

McCoy, 44, was the Broncos' offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012, before being hired by the Chargers in 2013.
