LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- With the Los Angeles Rams on the prowl for a new head coach, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' days are likely numbered. The Cleveland Browns offered Williams the same job for its squad recently, according to the Sporting News' Alex Marvez. The Browns also contacted Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, whose contract expires this offseason.

Ray Horton served as the Browns' defensive coordinator last season. The Browns allowed the second-most yards in the NFL in 2016.
Despite the Rams' likelihood to bring in a new coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Rams coaches are hoping to keep their jobs.
"Similar to #Chargers offensive staff, #Rams defensive staff is hanging with the hopes an offensive-minded coach keeps them," Rapoport tweeted. "Would make sense."
Williams, 58, had a 17-31 record as an NFL head coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2001 through 2003. The Rams allowed the ninth-fewest yards and 10th-fewest rushing yards per attempt and passing yards last season. He began his NFL coaching career in 1990, working in defensive quality control for the Houston Oilers. Williams was suspended by the NFL for the 2012 season for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal.
