Tom Savage won't be Houston Texans backup QB vs. Oakland Raiders

Quarterback Tom Savage remains in the NFL's concussion and will not back up Brock Osweiler in Saturday's wild-card playoff game against the Oakland Raiders.

O'Brien said Wednesday there was still a chance Savage could play, but confirmed Brandon Weeden will be active as the backup quarterback Saturday at NRG Stadium.

Weeden was active for only two games this season when Savage missed time with an elbow injury.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien named Osweiler as the starter on Tuesday over Savage, who sustained a concussion in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Savage, who made only his second career NFL start in Sunday's loss, left the game early in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He returned for one play when he took a knee to end the half, but was re-evaluated at halftime and ruled out for the rest of the game.

Savage was 5 of 8 for 25 yards before his injury.

Osweiler completed 21 of 40 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown in relief of Savage. Osweiler also ran for a 1-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The Texans signed Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million contract during the offseason after he left the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.

Osweiler struggled this season, losing his starting job and ending the regular season with 2,957 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a 72.2 passer rating in 15 games.

Raiders rookie quarterback Connor Cook will make his first career NFL start in Saturday's wild-card game against the Texans, with Pro Bowler Derek Carr out because of a broken leg and Matt McGloin's shoulder injury causing him to miss practice this week.
