Jeff Garcia wants a shot to coach San Francisco 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Making a plea for a new job to a prospective boss late on New Year's Eve typically isn't the smartest plan.

But that's what former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia did, when he tweeted the team's CEO Jed York, asking for a chance to coach the team.

"Let's go @49ers, the time is now @JedYork. You want fire, passion & knowledge, I have it all & an experienced staff to back me. #2017Comeback," Garcia tweeted at 10:43 p.m., before deleting it.

York fired former coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke hours before the tweet.

Garcia was at it again on Wednesday morning in an appearance on KNBR 1050.

"Let's be honest with each other. As much as I believe and feel that I am capable of leading a team, people don't want you to be able to take the shortcut," Garcia told KNBR 1050, via NBC Bay Area. "They want you to go through the process - they want you to start as an assistant, they want you to work your way up to the coordinator, they want you to work your way into that head coach position."

"I tell you what -- the 17 years of professional football experience that I have in my back pocket, and the years of growing up around a father who was a head coach and just being around the game -- have prepared me to be the leader of a football team. And that's what this team needs -- they need a leader of the football team."

Garcia also said on his Twitter account that he would take a quarterback coaching job if offered.

"And everybody needs to buy in to that culture, and everybody needs to get on the same page, and everybody needs to work their tail off and grind, and inspire, and motivate, and encourage and go out and battle every single day -- not just on Sundays -- every single day in practice," Garcia told KNBR 1050. "We're creating a culture where you're gonna compete, and the best players that give us a chance to win are gonna be the guys on the field."

Garcia, 46, played for the 49ers from 1999 to 2003, becoming a three-time Pro Bowl selection. He earned another Pro Bowl nod in 2007, as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also played for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and Philadelphia Eagles.

He coached one year of offense in the CFL in 2014. He was an offensive assistant in 2015 for the St. Louis Rams. He was fired by the Rams last January, along with four other assistant coaches.
