The New York Jets are making sweeping changes to their coaching staff. While head coach Todd Bowles remains in place, Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is retiring after a storied NFL coaching career and five assistants will not be returning to East Rutherford, N.J. next season.

"I informed Coach Bowles prior to the 2016 season that I would retire after this season," Gailey said in a statement Tuesday. "I thought it was best to tell him early, so that he could begin to think about how he would move the team forward on offense.
"While we did not have the season we all wanted to have, I think there are some great people here at the Jets and in the New York/New Jersey area. I wish them all the best moving forward."
Bowles informed quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo, running backs coach Marcel Shipp, defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, outside linebackers coach Mark Collins and defensive backs coach Joe Danna of their dismissals on Tuesday.
"I appreciate all of their hard work and commitment and wish them the best," Bowles said.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday morning that the Jets would make "wholesale changes" to their defensive coaching staff later in the day.
Gailey, 64, spent the past two seasons as New York's offensive play-caller. He orchestrated a Jets offense that amassed a franchise-record 5,925 yards and scored 387 points -- the most since the 1998 season -- in 2015.
"I'm grateful to Chan for joining our coaching staff and enjoyed working with him," Bowles said of Gailey. "The respect that I have for him as a person and a coach only increased during our time together."
Before joining the Jets, Gailey was the Buffalo Bills head coach from 2010-12 and coached the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-99.
In addition to multiple NFL and collegiate assistant positions, Gailey was the head coach at Georgia Tech (2002-07), Samford (1993) and Troy State (1983-84). His first coaching job was as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Florida in 1974-75.
