The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed running back Charles Sims on injured reserve Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, ending his season.

Sims has the rare distinction of being placed on IR twice in the same season.

The 6-foot, 211-pound Sims suffered a knee injury in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 2 and was placed on injured reserve eight days later.

The Bucs subsequently used their one designated-for-return tag on him and he came back to action in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints. Overall, Sims played in seven games with two starts this season, rushing 51 times for 149 yards and one touchdown, while catching 24 passes for 190 yards and one score.

To take Sims' roster spot, the Bucs promoted fullback Austin Johnson from the practice squad.

The 6-2, 240-pound Johnson was signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad on Dec. 13. He spent time on the Saints' active roster and practice squad from 2013-15, playing in 17 games (two starts) and rushing 12 times for 31 yards and one touchdown, with seven catches for 45 yards and one touchdown. He originally entered the league as a college free agent with the Saints in 2013.

The team also signed defensive end Deonte Gibson and running back Blake Sims to the practice squad. Offensive tackle Kyler Kerbyson was released from the practice squad.

The 6-1, 266-pound Gibson entered the league this season as a college free agent with the Detroit Lions. He spent the offseason and preseason with Detroit.

The 5-11, 218-pound Blake Sims spent time on the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad earlier this season.
