ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said his team has not heard yet from the NFL about a possible suspension for safety Deshazor Everett.

Everett drilled Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles on a punt return during the third quarter of Sunday's 27-22 win and was hit with a penalty for interfering with an opportunity to catch.

"I didn't see (Sproles fair-catch it)," Everett said. "But I thought the ball was right there in front of me when I went for the tackle. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The ball hit me in the back. As you can tell, football is a split-second game. Unfortunately, I didn't make the right decision."

The Eagles certainly weren't happy with Everett. A brief melee ensued.

Gruden said a fine is more likely for Everett, who had an eventful game filling in as a reserve safety with Will Blackmon (concussion) out. He was on the field for 11 defensive snaps, intercepted a pass from Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz in the end zone and had two special teams penalties.

"I love his energy. He plays hard, he plays fast," Gruden said. "Special teams, he has made his mark. He got an opportunity to play at safety and cover the tight end and made a big interception for us. Hopefully, that role will continue to expand a little bit."
