Kaepernick struggled mightily in Sunday's 26-6 loss to the Chicago Bears before getting benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert in the fourth quarter. Kaepernick was sacked five times and completed just 1-of-5 passes for 4 yards, with the passing yardage serving as the lowest of his career and his 39.6 passer rating matching his career-worst.
"(Kaepernick) is going to be the starter and we'll go from there," Modkins said on Tuesday. "We just decided during the game to try to see if Blaine could give us a spark. Kaep is back being the starter. It's nothing other than that."
Modkins wasn't interested in detailing if the snowy conditions at Soldier Field played a role in Kaepernick's struggles.
"I don't know. We're not into excuses. We just didn't do enough to get it done," Modkins said. "The weather was bad for both teams and we didn't do enough to get it done. We've got to be better. We're not into any particular reasons, excuses, anything like that. We just did do enough to get it done."
Kaepnerick echoed a similar tune.
"Get back to work. That's what we have to do is move onto the Jets, take what we can from that film, correct our mistakes, correct execution, make sure we're putting in the work this week to prepare to go get a win," Kaepernick said.
San Francisco (1-11) recorded its lone win in a 28-0 rout of the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener. The 49ers will attempt to snap an 11-game losing skid against the Jets (3-9), who have dropped four in a row -- including a 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.
