How Bill Belichick cost Tim Tebow $1 million

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow might not return to playing football, but he is more than happy to talk about his career in a series of books.

Tebow recently went on "Fox & Friends," where he spoke about how devastated he was after being cut by the New England Patriots in 2013. He followed the release with a short tenure for the Philadelphia Eagles, before being cut again.

The 29-year-old was perplexed, following his release from the Patriots, about not having a house or a car and wondered how he would make a living.

That matter could have been more complicated by his former coach, Bill Belichick. While with the Patriots, Belichick advised Tebow not to take a $1 million endorsement deal.

"I remembered when I had signed with the team in June," Tebow wrote in his book "Shaken." "Then I'd had an offer on the table to make a one-day appearance endorsing a product for a million-dollar paycheck. I'm sure you'd agree that a million bucks is a lot to make in just twenty-four hours. But I wasn't quick to say yes.."

Tebow wrote that if it would have been another team, he "probably would have said yes to the offer."

"I didn't want to be a distraction on the team," Tebow told "Fox & Friends." "I wanted to be another guy in the locker room. Someone that could work, someone that could be a backup to Tom. I don't want to be a distraction, having stuff all over the headlines. So that's why I called Coach Belichick to say 'Hey, what do you think about this? This is a great opportunity that I would say yes to. But I want to do what's right for the team first.' He appreciated me calling but said, 'Hey, listen, I would prefer if you didn't do it.' So of course I didn't because I put the team first."

"But that's not something I look back and regret at all. It was me trying to honor the team and if I could do it again I would do the same thing."

Tebow earned a gig with ESPN to serve as a SEC analyst, before trying to catch on with the Mets.

He completed 173-of-361 passes for 2,422 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions between 2010 and 2012 for the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. He has a 1-1 career playoff record. Tebow spent just two months with the Patriots and five months with the Eagles.
