Washington Redskins' Robert Kelley running up a rep

ASHBURN, Va. -- Rookie running back Robert Kelley continues to progress for the Washington Redskins.

After 87 rushing yards in his first NFL start and 97 against a stout Minnesota defense in his second, Kelley ran wild over the Packers on Sunday with 137 yards.

The undrafted free agent took over for Matt Jones, who entered the year as the No. 1 back, but lost the job because of fumbles and a knee injury. Healthy now, Jones has been scratched each of the last two games for reserve running back Mack Brown, who can contribute on special teams. Kelley shows no signs of giving up his new role.

"We had high hopes because we saw what Rob was doing in practice, but we're not live tackling the practice effort," Washington coach Jay Gruden said. "We saw him in the preseason games, but to see what he does with the pads on -- well, it'd be tough to get him out of there now."

The Redskins have received another unexpected contribution from left tackle Ty Nsekhe.

Washington has won its first two games without suspended Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams in part because Nsekhe held up in pass protection and is feisty as a run blocker. GM Scot McCloughan insisted that Nsekhe could start for half of the 32 teams in the NFL this summer. He's been proven right so far. Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews returned from injury and had a quiet night against Nsekhe with just one tackle and no sacks.

"I thought Ty Nsekhe did a great job on Clay Matthews all night long," Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins said. "Just really proud of how everyone played and stepped up to the challenge that was presented. Last year, the playoff game, we had a hard time protecting those guys and I feel like tonight they really answered the call."

--Right tackle Morgan Moses struggled to play through a left ankle injury, but stayed on the field for all 68 offensive snaps and is expected to play in Thursday's Thanksgiving Day game at Dallas. ... Linebacker Su'a Cravens, a rookie, second-round draftee from USC, played 60 of 68 snaps and had a tackle for loss and a pass deflection. ... Inside linebacker Martrell Spaight recorded his first career interception when he picked off a Brett Hundley pass late in the fourth quarter. ... Inside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan recorded his eighth sack of the season and joins Jared Allen, Derrick Thomas, DeMarcus Ware and Reggie White as the only players since 1982 to register that many sacks in each of their first six NFL seasons.
