Cornerback Jason Verrett was placed on injured reserve by the San Diego Chargers on Friday with a partially torn ACL in his left knee.

The Chargers signed cornerback Trevor Williams off the practice squad to fill his roster spot, and the team filled Williams' spot with nose tackle Ryan Carrethers, who was waived Wednesday.

Verrett told the team on Tuesday that he was experiencing soreness in the knee, and an MRI on Wednesday revealed the partial tear that will require season-ending surgery. He is believed to have suffered the injury in a Week 2 victory over Jacksonville and has played with a partially torn ligament in his knee for the past two weeks. Verrett said there were "a lot of plays" the past few weeks where his body didn't feel right, but he was still shocked by the MRI results.

Verrett's season ends with 13 tackles, an interception and three passes defensed in four games. He also missed 10 games as a rookie to a torn labrum.

"It hurts, being able to get the results and then seeing my season is over with," Verrett said. "I was off to a good start. I definitely wanted to see how this season goes. I wanted to get back to another Pro Bowl, man. All of the above. I wanted to continue to be out there. It hurts. I cried yesterday, knowing it was a possibility with getting the MRI. Now, seeing I have a torn ACL, it sucks."

The loss of Verrett, a first-round pick in 2014 who has emerged as one of the league's top cover men, is a big blow to a pass defense that already ranks 27th in the NFL. Fellow starter Brandon Flowers has been sidelined since Week 3 due to a concussion.

The Chargers re-signed Steve Williams on Wednesday, and he practiced along with the team's only other healthy cornerbacks - Craig Mager and Pierre Desir. If Flowers isn't cleared to play against Oakland on Sunday, Mager and Desir could be in line to start against the league's No. 8 passing offense averaging 265.5 yards per game.

Trevor Williams, 5-feet-11 and 191 pounds, signed with the Chargers in May as an undrafted rookie out of Penn State. He spent the first four weeks of the season on the practice squad.

Verrett is the latest in a string of key Chargers to suffer season-ending injuries, following the losses of wide receiver Keenan Allen (knee), running back Danny Woodhead (knee) and linebacker Manti Te'o (Achilles). Running back Branden Oliver (Achilles), tight end Jeff Cumberland (Achilles) and wide receiver Stevie Johnson (knee) have also been lost to injury.

"If you looked at the way these players (on injured reserve) have worked this offseason, even before they got back for the offseason workout program and the way they worked through training camp, I mean, just look at those guys who've gone down and the way they've worked and the shape they were in," coach Mike McCoy said midweek.
