EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Despite the New York Giants' confidence this week that running back Rashad Jennings could overcome a thumb injury to play, the team elected to bench him Sunday morning.

Jennings, 31, suffered the injury in the Giants' Week 2 win against the New Orleans Saints. He left the game with his left wrist and thumb heavily wrapped. He resumed weekly practice on a limited basis.

Ralph Vacchiano reported Thursday that Jennings said his thumb was better but could "linger" this season. He was removed from the injury report briefly, before showing back up as questionable to face the Washington Redskins.

"He's continuing to try to work around that," Giants offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan told the New York Post. "It's something that's not natural. He's used to doing that without the cast...It's definitely an adjustment that we have great confidence he'll be able to make."

Jennings, a typically risky RB2 play, will be replaced by Shane Vereen and Orleans Darkwa. I like Vereen as an RB2 in PPR and a mid-level flex play in standard scoring.
