CHICAGO, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A day after being diagnosed with a sprained thumb, reports surfaced about how much time Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will miss this season.

NFL Network National Insider Ian Rapoport reported that time to be around 2 or 3 weeks. Brian Hoyer will take over at quarterback in Cutler's absence.

"With his sprained thumb, #Bears QB Jay Cutler expected to miss 2-3 weeks, source said. Timeline depends on how he heals over the next 3 days," Rapoport tweeted.

ESPN's Jeff Dickerson reported Tuesday that Bears coach John Fox said it "does not appear" that Cutler will need surgery. Rapoport said Tuesday that the Bears "are preparing for a lengthy absence" from the quarterback. Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday that Cutler has had ligament damage in his right throwing thumb since the Bears' Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans.

"According to multiple team sources, Cutler suffered his injury in the season opener against the Texans," Jahns reported. "One source said it's an injury that typically results in a three- to four-week absence."

Cutler, 33, completed 12-of-17 passes for 157 yards and an interception in the Bears' Monday Night Football loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a free agent in 2021.

Cutler has completed 62 percent of his career passing attempts for 31,781 yards, 205 touchdowns, and 143 interceptions. He owns a 67-69 career record as a starting quarterback.
