DETROIT, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions called up an old friend recently, looking to fill the gap left by an injured Ameer Abdullah.

Running back Joique Bell worked out for the Lions Tuesday, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan. Abdullah is expected to miss Week 3 after spraining his foot Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. X-rays after the game came back negative, but Abdullah could still miss multiple games. Abdullah, 23, met with North Carolina foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson Tuesday.

Theo Riddick and Dwayne Washington are expected to be the immediate fill-ins for Abdullah. The 30-year-old Bell rushed for 311 yards and four touchdowns on 90 carries last season for the Lions. He also had 22 receptions for 286 yards. From 2013 through 2014, Bell scored 16 touchdowns for the franchise.

In June, Bell told the Detroit Free Press that he had at least two teams interested in his services. He visited the Buffalo Bills in March, but never signed with a team.
