DALLAS, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- In an effort to clear salary cap space, the Dallas Cowboys are working to restructure the contract of cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Dallas Morning News Cowboys beat writer Brandon George reported the news Wednesday.

"Cowboys planning to convert $4 million of Scandrick's $5 million base into bonus that'd likely clear $3 million in cap space, sources said," George tweeted.

Scandrick, 29, signed a five-year, $20 million contract in May 2015. He is due $5 million this season and $3 million annually in 2017 and 2018. The Boise State product is due $4 million in his final season with the team.

Scandrick has seven interceptions, 9.5 sacks, and 282 tackles in his seven-year NFL career. He started 14 games last season.

In early August, TMZ Sports reported that Scandrick purchased a $2.8 million mansion in Los Angeles. In April, Scandrick and actress Draya Michele welcomed a new son.

The cornerback suffered a torn ACL and MCL last August, missing the 2015 season. He has been medically cleared to practice and avoided the physically unable to perform list to open camp.
