Trevor Siemian named Denver Broncos starting quarterback

DENVER, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A second-year quarterback who has never thrown a pass in a regular season game will replace Peyton Manning.

Trevor Siemian was named the Denver Broncos starting quarterback Monday. The move was not much of a surprise after his preseason performance against Mark Sanchez.

"Head Coach Gary Kubiak announced to the team Monday morning that Siemian will be the team's starting quarterback, bringing down the curtain on a competition that had been the team's dominant story of the offseason and training camp," Andrew Mason reported on the Broncos website.

Siemian also beat out rookie Paxton Lynch for the job. He completed 27-of-43 passes for 285 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions this preseason.

"I've got a lot invested and a lot of work that I can make some decisions off of now,'' Kubiak told reporters Saturday. "I'll do that. Does that mean I'm going to do it [Sunday] or Monday? I don't know. I've got enough going on that I can make a decision.''

Sanchez did not play during the 17-9 win against the Los Angeles Rams. The 29-year-old has 72 career starts and a 37-35 career record at quarterback.

The Broncos face the Carolina Panthers Sept. 8 in a Super Bowl 50 rematch to open the 2016 NFL season.
