The second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft might not be No. 3 very long in Philadelphia.
Based on offensive coordinator Frank Reich's initial review of quarterback Carson Wentz, the Eagles have a keeper.
"Carson, he's very smart, he picks everything up very fast," Reich said of Wentz's work in team practice sessions. "And physically he's a dominant athlete for the position."
Sam Bradford re-signed with the Eagles in March and is the No. 1 quarterback. Philadelphia also signed backup Chase Daniel to a three-year, $21 million deal because of his aptitude in new head coach Doug Pederson's offense.
Wentz played at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State and some projected him as a starter only if he fell into a situation -- like the one projected in Philadelphia -- where he had at least one year to get up to speed against NFL talent.
But Reich believes Wentz is well ahead of the curve.
"Absolutely. That's one of the reasons why we picked this guy. His aptitude is off the charts. I'm not sure I've been around a guy who's has this high of an aptitude as him at this age," Reich said. "It's really, really good and then he has the work ethic to go along with it. But he also has a maturity and a class about him to understand his role and understand he's got to earn his stripes and he's doing that. And he's got a great attitude about it."
