After shaking up the league landscape in January with a move from St. Louis, the Los Angeles Rams shook up the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, acquiring the No. 1 overall pick from the Tennessee Titans in a blockbuster deal.

The Rams are expected to use the pick to draft a quarterback, either Jared Goff of Cal or Carson Wentz from North Dakota State, to fill a standing need at the position.

The trade is the first involving the No. 1 overall pick since 2004, when the New York Giants acquired Eli Manning from the San Diego Chargers. The No. 1 pick has been traded seven times since 1990.

"It is not often that you have the number one overall pick and we hope to not be in this position again, but we tried to use that pick as currency to work the draft and maximize player acquisition," first-year Titans general manager Jon Robinson said. "We now have the ammunition to work the draft and acquire players that are good for this football team."

With last year's second overall pick, Oregon's Marcus Mariota, entrenched at quarterback the Titans were not in the running for the top passers in the draft. With several holes to fill, including left tackle, Robinson went for quantity over quality. Among the top left tackles in the 2016 draft, Robinson could find two or three of the top five still available at No. 15, the first-round pick acquired in Thursday's swap with Los Angeles.

Tennessee will send the top pick and its fourth- (No. 113) and sixth-round (No. 177) picks this year to the Rams in exchange for Los Angeles' first-round pick (No. 15), two second-round selections (Nos. 43 and 45) and a third-round pick (No. 76) in 2016. The Titans also will get the Rams' first- and third-round picks in 2017.

The Rams made a similar trade in 2012, but they were on the receiving end of the bounty of picks from the Washington Redskins, who wanted the No. 2 overall pick to draft Robert Griffin III. Three years later, the Rams still had a need at quarterback and the Redskins released Griffin, who is now a member of the Cleveland Browns.

General manager Les Snead of the Rams traded quarterback Sam Bradford to the Eagles for Nick Foles last offseason but Foles fizzled and was replaced as the starter. He's still on the roster but is behind journeyman Case Keenum on the preseason depth chart.
