Hall of Famer Haley calls Tom Brady rings 'tainted'

By Alex Butler

BOSTON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The only man with more Super Bowl rings than Tom Brady took a chance to call the quarterback's legacy "tainted," after attending Super Bowl XLIX last weekend, according to the {link:Talk of Fame Network. : "http://www.talkoffamenetwork.com/haley-bradys-super-bowls-tainted/" target="_blank" title="Haley to Talk of Fame network"}

Charles Haley, who won five rings between his time with the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, referenced DeflateGate as part of the reason the New England Patriots quarterback has a tarnished history when asked to choose Joe Montana or Tom Brady.

"Joe didn't have to cheat," Haley told the website. "I've lost all respect [for Brady]. When your integrity is challenged in the game of football, to me, all his Super Bowls are tainted.

"You have to say this just didn't happen overnight. Who wants that shadow over them? I could be wrong. But I realize there were 12 balls deflated and 12 ain't. Then you've got [Patriots coach Bill] Belichick coming on three different times trying to explain it. ... You know something is wrong."

Haley was Montana's teammate for two of his Super Bowl rings. The quarterback eventually picked up four total rings. Brady matched Montana with the 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

"This is what Charles Haley believes -- it's going to come back to haunt him one day," Haley told the website. "If the league doesn't come down on this guy. ... Everybody is talking about it. Nobody believes it was by accident. It is what it is.

"I'm not going to take any of his Super Bowl rings away from him," Haley said. "But it's sad that it has to be tainted like it is right now. Hopefully they'll come out and let us know what really happened. Then all the mystery is gone."

Haley, Junior Seau, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Will Shields, Mick Tingelhoff, Bill Pollian and Ron Wolf will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame this August.
