LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- With Walter Payton's Super Bowl XX ring being found in a couch on a college campus and Olympians leaving their gold medals at airports, it came as no surprise when O.J. Simpson's 1968 Heisman Trophy disappeared from the trophy case at University of Southern California.
But now, the trophy, which is a duplicate of the one given to Simpson, has been found by the LAPD, according to Los Angeles Times reporter Veronica Rocha.
The trophy and Simpson's USC jersey were stolen in 1994 from a display case in the lobby of the USC athletic department. Detectives recovered the trophy on Dec. 16.
The original trophy was seized after a $33.5 million judgement following Simpson's civil court case which found him liable for the deaths of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman. The trophy sold at a court-ordered auction in 1999 for $230,000. The trophy now sits in a safety deposit box in a Philadelphia bank, according to the Washington Post.
Police are not releasing details about where the trophy was found.
Simpson is currently serving time in a Nevada prison for a 2008 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction.
In his 11 year NFL career, Simpson carried 2,404 times for 11,236 yards and had 61 touchdowns. Before being drafted by Buffalo as the top pick in the 1969 NFL Draft, Simpson rushed for 3,423 yards and 36 scores in two seasons at USC.
