NBA Commissioner Adam Silver enters COVID-19 protocols, won't attend Game 5

June 13 (UPI) -- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver won't attend Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics on Monday night after entering the league's health and safety protocols.

The league declined to say whether Silver -- who typically attends all Finals games -- had tested positive for COVID-19 or been ruled a close contact of someone who had, nor did the NBA release any details about his health.

It also remains unclear whether Silver will be allowed to resume attending this year's Finals. As commissioner of the league, he is responsible for handing out the Larry O'Brien Trophy, which will be awarded either Thursday in Boston or Sunday in San Francisco.

Silver has served as the NBA's commissioner since February 2014. This is the league's ninth championship series held during his tenure, including the 2020 campaign that resumed inside a bubble at Walt Disney World in Florida during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.

The best-of-seven series between the Warriors and Celtics is currently tied at two games apiece.

Game 5 of the series is set for 9 p.m. EDT Monday at Chase Center in San Francisco.
