June 10 (UPI) -- Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White suffered a significant left shoulder injury while away from the team and will miss at least four months after undergoing surgery to repair the ailment.

In a statement released Thursday, the Bulls said the injury occurred over the weekend while White was "engaged in basketball activities away from the team." After the procedure, which was performed Thursday at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center, the team said White would be re-evaluated in four months.

The Bulls' timeline for White means an update will come right before the mid-October start of the 2021-22 regular season. The NBA said it will attempt to return to its typical calendar after the past two seasons were adjusted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

White, who was selected with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2019 draft, is coming off an inconsistent second season. The 21-year-old guard appeared in 69 games (54 starts) and averaged 15.1 points, 4.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds while shooting just 41.8% from the field and 35.9% from 3-point range.

"It was up-and-down for him this year," Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said of White last month. "But I've always said this about him, he's got great resolve. He's got resiliency, and he's got great bounce-back ability."

White was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2020 after averaging 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists over 65 games, primarily off the bench.

The Bulls finished third in the Central Division with a 31-41 record this past season.
